The oldest DVD players only did H.262 video, but newer ones can play h.264 and h.265 files. the software converted your video from (avi, wmv, mp4, whatever) to those mpeg-2 VOB files, then burned those VOB files onto the disc while making sure they were organized in a very specific way that DVD players require.īut for many years we've been on more modern video formats.
So when you burned a video to DVD using some software, what was really happening was. They'd all be encoded with an older video format, which gave good quality but also big file sizes (MPEG2, h.262). The meat of the DVD is the VOB files, those are the actual video. In the past, DVD format was a very specific thing: your DVD disk had a bunch of file types you pretty much never see anywhere except on DVDs, stuff like VOB and IFO files. This takes a little extra explaining to answer.
